Every site has its story, and Barkers.org is no exception.

Who?

This site is completely owned and operated by the Barker Family of Tacoma, WA, USA. Currently, the majority of the site (okay, all of it) is maintained by eldest son Jay Barker.

What?

Currently featured at Barkers.org are sub-sites covering topics that were at one time of interest to Jay. These sites have been commended by numerous media entities and are still maintained.

When?

This site was erected in October of 1996. In the beginning, content (such as Online Connection) from Jay's previous site was moved over. The site is intended to be available for all to see every second of every day until the end of time.

Where?

The content of this site is created in Tacoma and Seattle, WA. It physically resides on a server located in Seattle, WA.

The content here should be equally useful to people from many geographic regions. All content is intended for people who communicate in English and some content is intended for residents of North America.

Why?

Why not? Seriously, the purpose of this site is to house content created by members of the Barker family. The content is a way to give back to the Internet community. The creation of the content also keeps one abreast of the rapid development of Internet and web design technologies.

How?

The Barkers.org web site uses a variety of software and technologies. The site mainly consists of standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Programs written in Perl are used to process e-mail and provide search capabilities. Usually Notepad and FrontPage are used to create text-based content and scripts. Images are presented in standard GIF and JPEG formats. Photoshop is used for most image creation and manipulation.

Behind the scenes, we use an Apache web server on a UNIX operating system. Server side includes are used to ease maintenance and to provide for consistent navigation on the site. Analog is used to process server log files.

Revenue from advertisements helps pay for web site hosting and Internet access costs.
