The Basics
A brief description of the Microsoft Outlook Express edit window and its components.
The Outlook
Express edit window! This is where you'll be designing
your newsletter and e-mail messages.
This impressive piece of Microsoft technology is a powerful tool, but use it wisely. Be sure to read the netiquette section before you start posting messages to actual newsgroups or e-mail.
I'll start by giving you some names to the different parts of the edit window.
At the very top is the menu bar. This is where the words File and Edit appear. We'll call the icon bar below the menu bar the primary toolbar. Microsoft probably has some official name for it, but we'll call it primary toolbar for now. Below the primary toolbar are the news headers. These are all the pertinent information such as recipient and subject.
Our next bar is one of the most important. This is the HTML toolbar. If you don't see the HTML toolbar here's how you get it. Click on the menu bar where it says Format. When the drop-down menu comes up click on Rich Text (HTML). If this is your first time doing it, you will receive a warning message stating that not everyone will be able to properly see your post if you use the HTML format. For more information on this issue please visit the netiquette portion of this web site.
Below the HTML toolbar is the body window. This is where you will type in the body of your message. To open the Outlook Express edit window open the program and click on the New Message icon. You can also click on the menu bar and click File then New and Message.
